Existe en los modernos análisis una tendencia a buscar un
camino evolutivo total desde el Dryopithecus y Ramapithecus y Proconsul a través del
Australopithecus hacia el
hombre moderno. Este enfoque se ejemplifica mediante la gráfica de Pilbeam
empleada por Johanson, D. C. y Edey, M. A. (1981) para apoyar su argumento, en
una obra de divulgación dirigida a los no científicos.
Por esta y otras razones, Day, M. H. (1977), en la tercera
edición de su erudita y cauta obra acerca del hombre fósil, los desecha
totalmente en base de que se hallan demasiado alejados para su inclusión. No se
ha aducido jamás evidencia alguna que indique que Dryopithecus, Ramapithecus o
Australopithecus hayan
cambiado de uno a otro con su culminación en el Homo
sapiens; y esta hipótesis está abierta a graves
dudas.
El Sr. Richard Leakey implicó en 1981 a una amplia audiencia
televisiva de siete semanas en el Reino Unido acerca de sus puntos de vista
personales acerca de The Making of
Mankind (El surgimiento de la humanidad). Su libro
del mismo título (Leakey, R. E. [1981]) sigue siendo ampliamente leído; pero
todo lo que se expresó en 1981 parece haber sido repudiado por el Sr. Leakey en
1982, en una conferencia pronunciada ante la Royal Institution en Londres (véase
Cherfas, J. [1982]).
El estudioso de la antropología que tenga convicciones
cristianas debería tratar toda la argumentación tocante a la evolución del
hombre con profunda suspicacia.
